Forensic Locksmith Manual 2nd Edition
Forensic locksmithing is one of the most lucrative disciplines in the industry. And it should be. To be considered an authoritative investigator and expert witness, the forensic locksmith needs to be proficient in multiple disciplines, many of which are completely unrelated to each other: report writing, business and legal matters, chain-of-custody procedures, photography, deposition and courtroom practices, to name but a few. Additionally, a forensic locksmith will need profound expertise in their chosen discipline. Whether it is vehicle theft, master key systems, life safety codes, or toolmark examination, the investigator will need to be “the best of the best” to be considered an expert by peers and the legal community. Much has changed in forensic locksmithing since the dawn of the 21st century. An example is the astonishing transition at the societal level from analog (film) to digital photography. While some elements of analog photography – mostly terminology – are still relevant, most of the material in the first edition was found to be of little value. This one element of the investigative process plainly illustrates that forensic locksmithing is one of the most fluid specialties in the industry. The Forensic Locksmith Manual 2nd Edition is not meant to be the be-all-end-all source for topics needed to be a forensic locksmith or to run a successful investigative business. FLM 2 just covers too many subjects to be that kind of book. Instead, it is meant to be an initial resource to direct the user to other sources of information for a deeper dive into the subject matter of interest at the moment. There are over fifteen authors and contributors involved in this project. Wherever possible, material from the Forensic Locksmith Manual 1st Edition – originally published in 2000 – was included in this edition. Contributors to both editions are included in the “Acknowledgements” chapter. Their generous contribution of time and content to both editions of the Forensic Locksmith Manual is greatly appreciated.
